airplay videos/audios/movies/media content streaming from ipad via Apple TV/Apple TV 2

What is Apple’s AirPlay?

In case you haven’t been following along, AirPlay is the ability to wirelessly stream audio and video from a device like an iPad 2 to your 2nd generation Apple TV. The Apple’s AirPlay tech lets you stream music photos and video throughout your entire house wirelessly so you can enjoy your entire iTunes library in any room and anytime. It’s essentially and enhancement on the existing AirTunes feature that already let you stream audio from iTunes to an AirPort Express router so that you could pipe your tunes directly into a connected receiver. AirPlay wireless technology will be fully integrated into Apple devices, speaker docks, AV receivers, and stereo systems. AirPlay does more than just stream your music to external speakers. It streams information about your music, too. Song titles, artists, album names, elapsed and remaining time, and album artwork all appear on AirPlay-enabled speakers with graphical displays.

iPad with AirPlay

iPad can be more amazing with AirPlay tech. Apple iOS 4.3 includes upgrade of AirPlay for iPad, iPod Touch, iPhone and Apple TV devices. AirPlay now lets you stream media from an iPad to Apple TV so that you can watch iPad movies on HDTV and speakers wirelessly. All the great stuff on your iPad, video, audio and photos can be streamed to Apple TV 2 without a hitch. Suppose you have great HD videos on your iPad and some friends on your couch, or you’re in the middle of an epic action scene that could use a little more screen, just tap the AirPlay icon on your iPad and see it on your HDTV.

(Tip: Make sure your iPad and Apple TV are connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and the AirPlay icon appears automatically.)

Apple AirPlay Hands on-iPad video and music on HDTV

iOS 4.2 let me stream content from the iPad to the new Apple TV that was connected to a 55-inch TV. After connecting the Apple TV to a wireless network, I tapped the TV icon located in the upper-left portion of the iPad’s iPod section, and selected Apple TV. I started Blondie’s “Heart of Glass” and was surprised how quickly Apple TV recognized it. A second or two later, and the music was blaring through the TV’s speakers. I was impressed with the simplicity of the process. Bringing up the on-screen media controls by double tapping the Home button let me access the aforementioned media controls.

I streamed TV episodes and home movies from the iPad to Apple TV without a hitch. My Blu-ray movie rip Toy Story 3 looked just fine on the big screen. For the techies out there, the file specs are: 1280×720 in .mp4 at 2000kbps with stereo sound (it seems 5.1 sounds are losing after upgrade to iOS 4.3, and I had to convert AC3 5.1 to stereo with Video Converter software to get the sound back). I also streamed photos to Apple TV; naturally those of higher resolution looked sharper and clearer on the large display.

The system is dead-easy. Just make sure that your i-device and your Apple TV are on the same wireless network. Then choose your app: iPod for video or music, the Photos app for, well, photos and the YouTube app for, uh, you get the idea. Once your media is playing or your photo is displayed, simply tap the little rectangle pierced with upwards-pointing triangle icon and choose “Apple TV” from the list that pops up.

As of right now, the only apps that can send video wirelessly via AirPlay to the Apple TV is the Video app on the iPad (iPod app on the iPhone/iPod Touch) and Apple’s own YouTube and Photos apps.

If you have content on your iPad or iPhone that you don’t have on your Mac/PC, then I suppose it’s handy to be able to stream that content to the Apple TV without the need of a middle-man device. And you may also rip Blu-ray movies to iPad for streaming to Apple TV via AirPlay.

[Apple TV 2/Apple TV 5.1 sound]Backup Blu-ray to Apple with AAC 5.1 sounds faster than ever!

March 28th, 2011

[Apple TV 2/Apple TV 5.1 sound]Backup Blu-ray to Apple with AAC 5.1 sounds faster than ever!

Ever thought of putting your DVD collections to Apple TV? Why not? With digital backups on Apple TV, you will never have to hunt for a movie in hundreds of DVDs and then bother to place it in a DVD player. Instead, you just sit on the bed and select desired movie with a handy remote control. Be sick with the long time ripping process? Oh, in that case you should not miss the Pavtube Blu-ray to Apple TV Converter, which allows you to take advantage of NVIDIA’s GPU acceleration, improving the ripping speed to 3-5 times faster.

The secret of ripping Blu-ray to Apple TV 3-4 times faster

By processing video conversions on NVIDIA’s GPU instead of your computer’s CPU, ripping time is greatly shorted and more CPU resources can be spared for other applications, making your computer run much smoother. CUDA based Pavtube Blu-ray to Apple TV/Apple TV 2 Ripper helps you rip Blu-ray much faster than ever in the availability of NVIDIA’s CUDA enabled Graphics card. I have tested the CUDA enabled Blu-ray ripping process on a 1GHz Dual Corel PC with Apple TV 1280*720 MP4 video (encoded with H.264/AAC) and it takes 90min only comparing with when CUDA is disabled. Here’s what I do with the Avatar Blu-ray Disc.

Step-by-step guide of ripping Blu-ray to Apple TV with AAC 5.1 audio:

Download a free trial of PavtubeBlu-ray to Apple TV/Apple TV 2 Converter first. The Blu-ray Ripper and DVDs converts commercial Blu-ray Discs and DVDs to various video and audio formats for Apple TV, iPad, iPhone 4, iPod Touch 4, PS3, Wii, Android smartphones, etc.

Step 1. Load BD movie to the Pavtube Blu-Ray to Apple TV/Apple TV 2 Converter

Connect an external BD drive to your PC if there is not an internal one. Place in source Blu-ray disc. Install and launch the Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper software, click “BD/DVD ROM” or “BD/DVD Folder” to load Blu-ray movie files into the app. When movie is loaded, make sure the CUDA button is activated.

Step 2. Set H.264 HD MP4 for Apple TV.

Click on “Format” bar to determine the output format. To take advantage of CUDA acceleration and k eep the best quality for Apple TV playback, I select “Apple TV H.264 1280*720 (*.mp4)”. The format creates HD MP4 with AAC 5.1 surround sound.

Step 3. Start ripping Blu-Ray to Apple TV with AAC 5.1 sound at fastest speed.

Click on “Convert”button to start Blu-Ray to Apple TV conversion. The whole process takes 96min and the generated file size is 4.73GB.

Once the ripping task is finished I click “Open” button at the bottom of the main interface to get the output MP4 files for Apple TV. The image quality turned out to be excellent:

I then click the CUDA button to turn the CUDA off, and convert Avatar Blu-ray to Apple TV H.264 1280*720 (*.mp4) format again. This time it takes 455 min to generate a 4.66GB file.

So my advice for guys that wanna backup Blu-ray movies to Apple TV is, have a try with Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper v3.7 and experience the CUDA acceleration by yourself. You’ll love it. For more info about the CUDA acceleration you can check CPU acceleration and CUDA based Pavtube Blu-ray Ripper v3.7.

How to create a custom format for shrinking Blu-ray movie using Pavtube ByteCopy?

March 23rd, 2011

How to create a custom format for shrinking Blu-ray movie using Pavtube ByteCopy?

The flexible Pavtube ByteCopy software not only allows for lossless Blu-ray and DVD ripping, but also lets you create a custom format based on your own requirements. This guide focuses on how to create a custom format for shrinking Blu-ray movie.

Pavtube ByteCopy mainly allows you to set output video/audio quality by entire disc and individual Title. When the default formats do not meet your need, you can use custom output option to create a custom format. Here’re steps to create new output option.

1. Load a Blu-ray Disc or DVD to Pavtube ByteCopy. Place the disc into drive, run Pavtube ByteCopy, and click “Load Disc” button

to import movie.

2. Select the whole disc (root directory).

3. Click “Edit Disc” button to enter “Edit Disc” window.

4. Find the “Format” bar, and select “Custom” from dropdown list of “Format” bar.

5. Click “Settings” button to set and save new output format in “Setting Disc Streams” window.

6. Check the “Encode” box below “All Video Stream” and “All Audio Stream”, and set customized video codec, size, bitrate, frame rate, audio codec, sample rate, bitrate, channels and subtitle codec. For instance, to create a format for converting Blu-ray movie to 720p video with DVD quality and Dolby Digital 5.1 sound, you can use the settings shows below.

7. When everything’s set, click “Save” button, give a name to the newly created format, and click “OK”.

8. Click “OK” on “Setting Disc Streams” window and back to “Edit Disc” window. You’ll find that the new format is added to dropdown-list of “Format” bar.

The next time you rip Blu-ray or DVD movie, just follow the steps above and select custom format in drop-down list of “Format” bar in the 3rd step to use the custom format for Blu-ray/DVD ripping.

Some helpful tips:

1. By default the video size is “original”. When you make changes to video size, please also check the “Encode” box below “All Subtitle Stream”. Although the original subtitle looks fine for 1920*1080 video, it might go beyond the screen when the video is resized to 1280*720, so make sure the subtitle is converted as well.

2. Do not set 6 channels for audio when MP3 or MP2 codec is selected. Do not set 1 channel when DTS is set as audio codec.

3. A lossless Blu-ray movie can take up space ranges from 20GB to 50GB. If you want to cut down file size, try setting smaller value in video “Bitrate” instead of using “original”.

18000kpbs- excellent HD video quality close to Blu-ray standard

12000kbps- great HD video quality for watching on HDTV

5000-8000kbps- DVD video quality

2000kbps- video for portable media players (e.g. Galaxy Tab, Archos 101)

512kbps- video for regular mobile phones

4. In order to play a video clip properly on your device, make sure the video is encoded with proper codec (ByteCopy offers H.264, Xvid, MPEG-2 only) and packed in proper container format (MKV only for ByteCopy) with proper bitrate, frame rate, resolution, audio channels.
